PositionAs a partner and collaborator with the chair of the board of directors, executive director, and fellow board members, each member’s role is to support and sustain the work of Journey to Hope. Board members are the fiduciaries who steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure Journey to Hope has adequate resources to advance its mission. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1.     Advance the mission of Journey to Hope through gifts of time, talent, and an annual financial contribution; expand your sphere of influence on behalf of the people served by Journey to Hope.
  • Support of the mission, goals, policies and programs of Journey to Hope
  • Serve actively on one or more of the any future standing committees (executive, development, finance, and program) and regularly attend board meetings
  • Serve as a “champion” of Journey to Hope and connect people with charitable resources to the executive director and the future development committee
  • Advance Journey to Hope’s profile in the community through mutually beneficial collaborations and partnerships
  • Have an understanding of, and respect for, the Covenant agreement between Northminster Presbyterian Church and Journey to Hope and recognize both as co-equal, affiliated ministries
  • Respect the board’s governance role and maintain confidentiality of the board’s proprietary information and executive sessions; honor potential conflict of interest scenarios by refraining from discussion
2.     Ensure the financial sustainability of Journey to Hope; understand your role in fiduciary matters.
  • Approve Journey to Hope’s annual operating budget, audit reports, board-enacted policies, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Hire, establish compensation, evaluate, and terminate executive director
  • Review outcomes and metrics created in any active strategic plan to evaluate its impact, and regularly measure performance and effectiveness using those metrics (it is the responsibility of the staff to implement the plan as this is operations, not governance)
  • Actively participate in the board’s evaluation and strategic planning efforts

DonationWe strive for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
RequirementsWe require our board members to attend monthly board meetings, contribute personally meaningful funding, and to volunteer to help with various projects, ad hoc committees, and events in alignment with their skills and schedule.
On-boardingBoard member candidates are invited to attend one or more meetings in the fall before their term would begin in February. Once a mutual interest has been established, candidates also meet with the Executive Director and Board Chair to discuss what the commitment and expectations are, per our board member job description. The ED and Chair become a support network for the new board member.
