Board Member – Governance

Our board
  • 30 members
  • Elected to a 3-year term
  • May serve 2 consecutive terms
  • Board works directly with Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer, Client Services Director, Development Director, Marketing Director and Director of Operations.
  • Caracole carries Directors and Officers liability coverage
Position1. Embrace the Caracole mission.
  • Understand Caracole’s services, clients and organization.
  • Attend new board member orientation (2-3 hour meeting in April-May)
2. Participate in Board meetings.
  • Full Board meets 6x per year, in “even” months beginning in June.  We currently meet 8:00 – 9:30 AM, 1st Wednesday of the month.  We will poll the new Board to determine if this continues to be the best meeting time.
  • Caracole Annual Meeting (public meeting) will be held the evening of May 7, 2019.
  • Review materials sent out prior to meetings.  Participate in discussions.  Take initiative to get personally involved and your experience will be much more rewarding.
3. Participate on a Board committee (Governance, Program, Development/Event, Finance, Marketing/PR, Advocacy)
  • Lead/participate on a committee to dive deeper in the organization.
  • Caracole works from a 3-year Strategic Plan (2019-2021).  Each Board Committee aligns its work with the objectives established in the Strategic Plan.
4. Develop sufficient knowledge of services, programs, and operations to understand the budget and to participate in evaluation of the Executive Director (every 2 years).FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Make a financial contribution to the Annual Appeal at a level of personal significance.  It is imperative that Caracole reports to funders 100% Board participation in the Annual Appeal. Provide list of prospective donors to receive annual fundraising letter.  Sign/personalize letters to your prospective donors (May and November).
  2. Actively participate in fundraising activities/events and recruit people to attend.  Be a Sponsor at events, if possible.
ADVOCACY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Educate people about Caracole and connect them to our mission as advocates, donors and volunteers.  Be a public face of Caracole.

On-boardingAt the beginning of each board term, the senior leadership members of Caracole staff offer an orientation session that fully describes the mission, programs, fundraising/marketing strategies and operations of the agency. This is typically held on a weeknight in May.
