Board Member – Fundraising

Our boardThe Gorman Heritage Farm Board is an oversight and governance Board, not involved in the daily operations of the Farm. We have 5 standing committees: Finance (monthly conference call), Land Use (monthly in person), Education (quarterly in person), Fundraising/Marketing (quarterly in person), and Executive (as needed). Each Board Members is expected to participate on a Committee. We need Board members with Fundraising and Marketing experience.
PositionExpectations for Board Members
  • Exercise duty of care and loyalty to the Foundation by being informed, exercising independent judgment, and acting in good faith.
  • Have a working understanding of the Foundation’s constitution, contract with Village of Evendale, Strategic Plan, Land Use Plan, mission, purpose, goals, objectives, and operating procedures and policies.
  • Be prepared for, attend, and be engaged at all Board and, as appropriate, Committee meetings.
  • Be willing to work with the Board, its Committees, and the staff to promote the mission, goals and objectives of the Foundation.
  • Ensure the Foundation operates lawfully and is properly managed.
  • Be familiar with and understand the Foundation’s finances and control policies.
  • Be focused on the strategic direction of the Foundation and avoid management of staff and involvement in normal day to day operations and activities of the Farm.
  • Be active in fundraising for the Foundation.
  • Be willing to make a meaningful annual financial contribution to the Foundation.
  • Regularly visit the Farm, attend special events, and become familiar with the staff.
  • Be respectful of views, opinions and concerns of the other Board members, the staff, and the public.
  • Avoid self dealing, conflicts of interest, or disclosures of confidential information.
Marketing / Development Committee
  • Review and approve Marketing plans established by staff.
  • Offer expertise and advice on projects as needed.
  • Assist Executive Director (ED) in planning and implementation of Annual Appeal.
  • Plan Board Fundraiser.
  • Evaluate annual fundraisers and help with annual events.
  • Independently solicit large donors and grants.
  • Work directly with donors and corporations to obtain support.
  • Review GHF position in the marketplace to better assure full leverage of the GHF brand and develop / present strategies to the Board to better leverage the brand.

DonationWe strive for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
RequirementsBe invested in the mission of Gorman Heritage Farm to educate about agriculture, nutrition, sustainability, and the environment. Attend all Board and Committee meetings. Board members are expected to attend and participate in our annual events, the Row by Row Dinner in late August (buy ticket/table, bring guests, paddle raise) and the Sunflower Festival the first weekend in October (volunteer time), as well as our annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast (Spring) and Dinner (fall).
On-boardingBoard application and resume reviewed by Executive Committee. Meeting with the Executive Director and Board Chair. Farm tour with Executive Director. Opportunity to sit in on a board meeting. An onboarding manual is provided.
