The IDEA Cincinnati Board will operate as a local board to provide governance, oversight, and connectivity with the communities IDEA serves, as well as providing local context for sustained success in Cincinnati. IDEA Cincinnati’s executive director reports directly to the Board, and through the Board, is held responsible for the academic, financial, and legal performance of schools within that region. To fulfill this purpose, Board members perform three core functions: Legal Compliance: The Board is responsible for IDEA Cincinnati complying with the sponsorship contract, as well as the various laws applicable to Ohio public bodies and public community schools. The board will adopt school, student, and employee policies to this end. Financial Performance: The Board directly governs the region’s finances by developing and maintaining a balanced budget and ensuring adequate resources. The Board provides approval of contracts and major expenditures. Academic Performance: The Board ensures academic success through its oversight of the regional Executive Director. Board Description Formatted Board Requirements Board Terms Founding members of the IDEA Cincinnati Board of Directors are asked to commit to an initial term of nine months, from September 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021. Following that period, founding members may be asked to extend their board service for one, two or three years, with the goal of staggering individual service terms. Future Board members commit to three-year, renewable terms (fiscal year July 1-June 30). At the end of each term, Board members will meet with the Board Chair and the Regional Leader to determine whether renewal would be mutually beneficial. Additional Expectations In addition to the three core functions listed above, Regional Board members are encouraged to support the organization in the following ways: Governance Participate in any mandatory community school board trainings as required by the State of Ohio. Attend and participate in board meetings: The board is expected to convene at least 4 times annually during the region’s start-up period (July 2020 – June 2022) and 8-10 times once schools begin operations. Participate in IDEA’s annual board retreat, which brings together board members from across all regions. Appoint two new Board members by March 15, 2022. Local Expertise Help IDEA to establish effective relationships with leaders and institutions in the government, philanthropic, non-profit, corporate, education, and other sectors, as well as with the public at large. Provide ongoing counsel for the Executive Director and Regional Leadership Team on local issues and context. Serve as a champion for high-performing public community schools within Ohio. Promote IDEA’s mission, vision, goals, and achievements to a broad regional audience. Connecting staff to contacts (e.g., corporate partners, guest speakers, elected officials) who will enable the region to pursue strategic partnerships and meet fundraising targets. Engagement Visit at least one IDEA school annually once schools are operating. Attend school events (e.g. Back to School Bashes, school tours, Royal Readers’ events or other volunteer activities) once schools are operating. Support and participate in regional and/or school-based fundraising events. Financial Support Make an annual contribution that would place IDEA among the top three organizations that you support through personal, corporate or foundation giving. Contribute an annual individual personal gift to IDEA to ensure 100% annual board member giving.
